Gishwati Mukura National Park is Rwanda’s newest and smallest national park, but it’s rich in biodiversity and ecological significance. Nestled in the western part of the country, the park is made up of two separate forests—Gishwati and Mukura—connected by a reforestation corridor. It spans over 34 square kilometers and is home to endangered chimpanzees, golden monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys, as well as over 230 bird species including the Albertine Rift endemics.

The park offers a serene, off-the-beaten-path nature experience with guided primate tracking, birdwatching, and nature walks through misty montane rainforests. Conservation and community involvement are at the heart of the park’s mission, offering visitors an intimate glimpse into the harmony between people and nature. It’s an ideal destination for eco-tourists and wildlife enthusiasts seeking a quiet, less commercialized safari.

A visit to Gishwati Mukura National Park is more than just a wildlife experience—it’s a journey into one of Rwanda’s critical conservation efforts. The park also plays a key role in climate regulation and watershed protection for the region. Whether you’re trekking for chimpanzees or simply absorbing the peaceful ambiance, Gishwati Mukura is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.
